We respect our candidates and they respect us. We often have an ongoing relationship with our candidates & a few are now clients. Interview Tips

Getting a job is not just about being the best qualified candidate but the candidate who best fits the role and the organisation. An assessment is based on a candidate’s ability to effectively communicate their abilities and style at an interview.

Knowing "what not to do" is also equally valuable. Consider the example of an executive interviewing for a position in a US company who, when asked "why do you want to work for the company?" responded with "That’s a good question, I haven’t given it much thought"!!

To be successful at an interview it is imperative to do your homework, as preparation is everything. Here are some helpful tips to consider.

Do:

  • Research the client company (use the internet, read publications such as NBR and major daily newspapers) and know what their current market position is and what their challenges are.
  • Re–read and study the position description or assignment specification prior to the interview.
  • Ensure you know who you are meeting – full name, title and contact phone number.
  • Allow additional time for traffic and finding a car park.
  • Consider the point of view of the interviewer, what would they want to know about you, and how you can demonstrate that you are the best person for the role.
  • Dress for the position – first impressions count!
  • Listen carefully. If you are unsure about a question it is okay to ask for clarification.
  • Be positive and professional.

Don't:

  • If you are a smoker, resist the urge to have a cigarette prior to the interview.
  • Don’t be late – timeliness is important.
  • Don’t be tempted to be negative about previous employers. If you have had bad experiences be prepared to explain these, but focus on what you learnt from the experience.

Sample questions to ask at an interview:

  • How long has the company been established?
  • What is the reporting/organisational structure?
  • What opportunities are there within the company for advancement?
  • Where are the likely areas of stretch in the position?
  • If I were successful in obtaining this role, what could I do that would make a significant difference to the company/team?
