Working with Search Consultants

The Process

Search consultants are contracted by a client to fill an employment vacancy. The recruitment process usually commences with the consultant "picking up" a brief from the client outlining what the competencies for the position are, and what sort of person would best fit within the existing culture. This may take a number of forms and may include job profiling and evaluation.

Once the requirements have been established, the job may be posted in print media or on online web publications. Some roles are undertaken on a search basis, i.e., candidates will be identified and approached individually to ascertain their interest in a role.

Kinross may not advertise all vacancies, as a unique point of difference is our ability to identify appropriate candidates before a client has the need to employ. This speeds up the recruitment process, facilitating a win/win situation for all parties.

As we work very closely with our clients and have an in-depth understanding of their businesses and likely needs, there are opportunities for us to proactively "float" candidates to them when we establish that there is a potential fit between a candidate's skills and attitudes and the client's likely requirements.

Some tips for working with recruiters:

  • Research which recruiters work in the areas you’re interested in.
  • Ask around and get referrals from people who are currently, or have been in the job market.
  • Telephone the consultant and ask if you are of interest to them.
  • Select 2-4 recruiters and build a relationship with them, making regular contact with them (ask them how frequently). Remember that communication is a two way street! Be proactive and take responsibility.

Remember that recruiters are paid by clients and not candidates, and must give priority to servicing clients’ requirements.

The consultant’s interview:

  • You may be asked to come in for an interview with a consultant. View this as a serious interview as this interview may determine if you are suitable to advance to the next step in the process - meeting with our client.
  • Dress appropriately and professionally and prepare yourself to provide up to three verbal references of previous employers.
  • Feel free to discuss the suitability of your verbal references with your consultant.

Before your interview:

  • It is helpful to have mapped out a list of the things you consider are important to you and essential in your search for employment, eg., company culture, management, financial resources, location, future opportunities, remuneration.
  • Note which aspects are negotiable, what are you prepared to compromise on?
  • What companies or industries are of interest to you, for what reasons? Make a list, research these target companies.

Your resúme or curriculum vitae is a critical piece of documentation when submitting your candidature for positions. It is important that you regularly update your resume and tailor it specifically to highlight skills and experience relevant to each position.
